Access to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park will once again be available to visitors and tour operators starting April 15, 2026, according to the evaluation carried out by regional authorities and the technical bodies involved in managing tourism and safety in the Cusco region.
The decision was made after a multi-sector meeting held in the city of Cusco, where the current state of the tourist route was reviewed, particularly the Cachora – Capuliyoq – Choquequirao section. During the meeting, trail conditions and identified risks were evaluated with the goal of determining whether it was viable to reopen access to this important archaeological complex.
The evaluation included representatives from several institutions: the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDC Cusco), the Sub-directorate of Cultural Heritage and Heritage Defense, the Security Unit, agencies linked to disaster risk management, and the Regional Department of Foreign Trade, Tourism and Crafts of the Regional Government of Cusco. Authorities from the district municipalities of Santa Teresa and San Pedro de Cachora were also present, providing key information about the state of the trail.
After reviewing the technical reports issued by the competent entities and considering current trail conditions, it was agreed to officially authorize the reopening of the route starting on the indicated date. However, this resumption of activities will be carried out gradually and responsibly, prioritizing visitor safety.
Before reopening, maintenance, cleaning, and conditioning work will be performed on the access trails. These efforts aim to ensure that domestic and international tourists can travel the route in suitable conditions, minimizing risks and guaranteeing a safe experience.
The institutions involved will also continue to develop permanent monitoring, prevention, and trail-maintenance actions. The goal is to ensure the sustainability of access and maintain safety standards for everyone visiting one of the most important and challenging archaeological destinations in Peru.
Finally, authorities urged local residents, tour operators, and visitors to stay informed through official channels and to comply with any directives issued in the framework of the reopening. These measures will allow Choquequirao's resumption of activities to take place in an orderly and responsible manner.
With this reopening, Choquequirao is once again preparing to welcome travelers seeking an authentic experience that combines nature, history, and adventure in one of the most impressive destinations in the Cusco region.
