Locals Restore the Route to Choquequirao After Three Days of Intense Faena
The residents of the communities near the route leading to Choquequirao once again demonstrated their commitment to the preservation and accessibility of this archaeological jewel. For three consecutive days, men and women from the area joined together in a hard workday to clear and restore the path, ensuring it was ready before the Holy Week holidays.
The heavy rains of recent months had caused landslides and damage in several sections of the trail, making access difficult for tourists and locals alike. Faced with this situation, the community organized a major faena (communal work session) in which volunteers, local authorities, and community members participated, removing debris with tools in hand, reinforcing the trails, and rehabilitating the critical points of the route.
The collective effort allowed the path to be left in suitable condition for transit, ensuring the arrival of visitors to this destination that rivals Machu Picchu in majesty. With the arrival of Holy Week, a considerable influx of tourists is expected, which will benefit the local economy and strengthen sustainable tourism in the region.
Now, all that remains is the issuance of the official statement by the Ministry of Culture to formally confirm the reopening. Meanwhile, residents await with anticipation the recognition of their efforts and the reactivation of tourist flow to Choquequirao.
With this action, the value of community work and the importance of preserving and promoting access to Peru's cultural treasures is once again reaffirmed.
InfoCusco also participated by collaborating with food and hydration during this hard work.
