Choquequirao Closed Due to Road Infrastructure Damage After Heavy Rains

The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco (DDC Cusco) announced the temporary suspension of visitor entry to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park due to the emergencies caused by heavy rains in the region. Despite the damage to road infrastructure, the entity reported that no damage to the archaeological heritage has been recorded.

The head of the DDC Cusco, Jorge Moya Coháguila, explained that the weekend's rains caused a landslide of large rocks that severely damaged the pedestrian bridge over the Apurímac River, in the area known as Playa Rosalinas. One of the bridge's tensioning cables snapped, leaving the structure tilted and at risk of collapse, so pedestrian passage has been closed indefinitely.

In addition, a large-scale huayco (mud and debris flow) destroyed the pontoon bridge over the Chunchumayo stream, in the section between Marampata and Choquequirao, completely blocking access to the monumental area. With this situation, the roads leading to Choquequirao have become impassable, leaving visitors stranded and affecting local residents who depend on tourism.

Authorities have deployed technical teams to assess the magnitude of the damage and coordinate rehabilitation work in the area. However, due to the complexity of access and weather conditions, no exact date has been established for the reopening of the route.

In the meantime, tourists and tour operators are advised to stay informed through the official channels of the DDC Cusco and to avoid planning visits to Choquequirao until further notice.
