Access to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park will be reopened to visitors and tourism operators starting April 15, 2026, following an evaluation conducted by regional authorities and technical institutions responsible for tourism management and safety in the Cusco region.

The decision was made after a multisectoral meeting held in the city of Cusco, where officials analyzed the current conditions of the tourist access route, particularly the Cachora – Capuliyoc – Choquequirao section. During the meeting, participants assessed route accessibility and identified potential risks in the area to determine the feasibility of reopening this important archaeological destination.

Representatives from several institutions took part in the evaluation, including the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, the Cultural Heritage and Heritage Protection Subdirectorate, the Security Unit, Disaster Risk Management authorities, and the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade, Tourism and Handicrafts of the Regional Government of Cusco. Authorities from the district municipalities of Santa Teresa and San Pedro de Cachora also contributed key information regarding the current condition of the access route.

After reviewing technical reports issued by the competent entities and considering the current conditions of the trail, authorities agreed to officially reopen access beginning on the announced date. However, the reopening will be implemented gradually and responsibly, prioritizing visitor safety.

Before reopening, maintenance, cleaning, and conditioning work will be carried out along the access route. These actions aim to ensure that both national and international visitors can travel safely and comfortably while minimizing potential risks.

Additionally, the institutions involved will continue implementing permanent monitoring, risk prevention, and route maintenance measures. The goal is to guarantee a safe and sustainable experience for tourists visiting one of the most challenging and impressive archaeological destinations in Peru.

Authorities also urged local residents, tourism operators, and visitors to stay informed through official channels and comply with the regulations issued as part of the reopening process. These measures will help ensure that tourism activities in Choquequirao resume in an organized and responsible manner.

With this reopening, Choquequirao prepares once again to welcome travelers seeking an authentic experience that combines history, nature, and adventure in one of Cusco’s most extraordinary destinations.
